SUNY MARITIME MARINE SURVEYING – On-Line Professional Education Courses

The overall aim of the SUNY Maritime on-line Marine Surveying program is to provide an on-line training platform to aid surveyors to obtain continuing education and upgrade current knowledge, to allow others to cross-train into the survey discipline, and to allow claims adjusters to enhance their knowledge of the survey industry. On completion of training, candidates will have a solid understanding of this field and be ready to work in many different aspects of it.

By completing these on-line courses, a student will become familiar with the role of a surveyor, the capacity in which a surveyor works, and the direction to follow to develop their own expertise in the field.

On-line learning proceeds at the student’s own pace, with group discussions designed for all new surveyors, those wishing to cross-train, claims adjusters, and those seeking to take the qualifying exams from certifying authorities and investigators from the industry.

The courses are designed for the continued improvement of job performance as well as advancement to other positions and for exam preparation for NAMS, SAMS, IIMS and other authorities.

Self-directed learning is provided via multiple formats; print, audio, videotapes, and the Internet. Students will be encouraged to share and interact with other students and add their own experiences and professionalism to the class.

Each of the three on-line surveying further address expert testimony topics:

  • Advocacies, how to prepare, demeanor and appearance, “the stand”, exercising selectivity, not going beyond “your ability” and courtroom emotions.
  • Key skills of presenting evidence.
  • Your role as independent educator of the court.
  • How the adversarial system works.
  • Roles of the various people in court.
  • Preparing for court and personal presentation.
  • Taking the oath or affirmation with confidence.
  • Techniques lawyers use in cross examinations and how to handle them.
