The international team of Jon Ames (Florida, USA)
and Paulo Alv
es
de Souza (Rio de Janerio, Brazil)
named their entry the
What Would Bolger Do
(WWBD) 26
. Designed for aluminum, it can be easily
converted to ply. Influenced by Phil Bolger, the hull is
derived from his “box-boat” forms, with plumb stem
and stern and developable, hard-chine form.
The
WWBD 26
has three alternative keel configura-
tion: centerboard; fin with bulb; and centerboard with
pivoting wings. Twin rudders offer good control with
the wide stern. Too keep the rig low and easy to han-
dle, the main is a sliding gunter, with a short flat top,
and the mizzen is lug rigged (a Bolger favorite). The
main spars are carbon fiber, but the mizzen mast is a
spar oar.
The accommodations meet the design competition,
with galley, head and a high-low table.
