That is because the new level of sophistica-
tion designed to sap out every ounce of en-
ergy from the fuel burned has also produced a
system that above all else is designed to pro-
tect itself. Engine mounted computers, sen-
sors et al don’t know whether you can stop
comfortably to address a problem or are in
serious jeopardy. They just do what they were
designed to do: often that’s shutdown or fail
to start. Often, they are not designed to be
A well-stocked inventory of spare parts includ-
ing all the electronics is the only solution to
keep you running, but not a perfect one. Many
of the parts that control the engine are plug
and play so they change out easily. That only
helps, however, if the new part works. What if
some other part upstream caused it to fail? Or
what if the new part in the box does not work
or is not coded properly. If a truck mechanic
gets a bad part, they just send him a new one.
Like most electronics I fear rigorous testing of
every part has likely been replaced by a “send
out another one” mentality. That’s not as easy
in open water. These parts are not designed
for the space shuttle.
It has long been my thought that before the
long trip you should install all those “spare
parts on the engine so that you know they
work. Then put the original ones into inven
tory as tested spares. At least you would
know the spare parts worked.
The single or twin decision seems pretty b
sic. But like so many things how you answ
it can affect a lot more than just economy
and much more than is first obvious. The
realities have not at this point caused me
totally rethink my 30-year-old opinions. It
however, given me cause to pay even clos
attention to “new improved” systems.
