Westlawn Instructor Nick Di Matteo has Retired
Walter Wales has Come Aboard as a New Instructor as of June 1, 2014
fter years of excellent work as a Westlawn instructor, Nick Di Matteo
has retired. We have all benefited immensely from Nick's depth of
knowledge, patience and attention to detail. We wish him all the very best
for long and pleasant retirement.
We are also very pleased to announce that Walter M. Wales has come
aboard as a new Westlawn instructor. Walter will be taking on all of Nick's
Walter Wales, PE holds a master's degree in engineering from the
University of Maine. His lifelong passion for boats, design, and rigging
includes designs that range from 8-foot dinghies to ships in excess of 600
feet, and includes ocean-racing sailboats and fishing boats. He is also an
experienced yacht-design instructor, having taught at Maine Maritime
Academy in Castine, Maine and at The Landing School in Kennebunkport,
Walter has worked for such notable designers as John Gilbert and Ted
Hood. He holds one of the patents for the then-groundbreaking roller-
furling system created at Hood Yacht Systems, and he led the design
team in its early development. More recently, he was chief engineer at
Hodgdon Yachts Inc., in East Boothbay, Maine, during the construction of
the 155-foot Bruce King designed luxury wooden yacht
Walter is now a freelance designer and consultant to the marine industry. Current projects include the redesign of a single
-skin 65 foot mini-tanker, to meet US Coast Guard double-hull requirements, and the redesign of the sail plan, mast, and
rigging for the rebuild of a 1930's era 52 foot Universal-Rule Q Boat. Walter is also an avid sailor who cruises and races
extensively from northern Labrador to the Caribbean.
Starting June 1st, Walter began grading lessons for all students who were previously assigned to Nick Di Matteo. We are
lucky to have an instructor with the depth of experience and background that Walter brings with him. It's a pleasure to
welcome him aboard.
